The Guam Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics is pleased to release the December 2005 Current Employment Report.
Total payroll employment on Guam increased by 280 jobs in the latest quarter bringing the year's cumulative job gain to 590 jobs. Total payroll employment went from 57,400 to 57,990 over the one year period from December 2004 to December 2005.
The number of private sector jobs increased by 110 in the latest quarter and by 750 in the latest year. The Construction and Hotel categories led the private sector job gains this quarter with Construction employment increasing by 190 and Hotels by 100 jobs respectively. The largest gains over the year were in Services, Transportation and Public Utilities and Finance, Insurance & Real Estate. The Transportation and Public Utilities industry gains over the year are attributed to the reclassification of the Guam Telephone Authority from government to private industry. Construction industry employment, while still 350 jobs below that of a year ago, appears to be on the rebound with it being the industry with the largest job gains this quarter.
Federal government employment was virtually unchanged this quarter but was down slightly over the latest year. Government of Guam employment increased by 170 this quarter due to an increase in the Guam Public School System (GPSS), but the total remained 70 jobs below that of one year ago.

The Guam Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics is pleased to announce the release of the June 2005 Current Employment Report. Federal Government civilian employment remains relatively unchanged from the last quarter and year ago figures. Government of Guam employment decreased by 1,040 jobs from the prior quarter and by 750 jobs over the comparable figure of one year ago. The June reduction in Government of Guam employment was primarily due to the reduction in educational institutions during the summer period but the sale of GTA also contributed. Private sector Average Hourly Earnings, Weekly Hours Paid and Weekly Earnings have generally changed little over the latest quarter and year, except in the Manufacturing category whose hours and earnings fell substantially due to reduced ship repair work in June.
Total employment on Guam has exhibited substantial stability with only marginal changes in the latest quarter and one year periods. Estimated total employment of 56,380 jobs for June 2005 is down 580 jobs since the comparable figures of one year ago. Construction employment remained moderately strong over the latest year, although down 530 jobs from a year ago. Transportation & Public Utilities gained 280 jobs over the latest year due to the transfer of the Guam Telephone Authority (GTA) from Government to private ownership. Retail Trade is up from a year ago in part due to increased tourist arrivals, but relatively unchanged in the latest quarter. Services other than hotels have remained steady this quarter but are down by 260 jobs from a year ago due largely to the reductions in Federal service employment contractors. The private sector employment total was down 120 jobs for the quarter but up 180 over the year. Click here to view or download the full report. |
